Conquer a fear or phobia

Does a fear or phobia get in the way of you achieving a goal or, living your life to the full? Perhaps you run a mile at the sight of a spider, or a dog? Or you are fearful of flying, which prevents you from enjoying holidays in countries that you might otherwise visit. Maybe you want to progress in your career, but you have a fear of presenting, which holds you back. 

Phobias are another form of anxiety, with common phobias including a fear of insects/animals, heights, needles, dentists, flying, small spaces, open spaces and many more besides.  Sufferers usually describe having an overwhelming fear, or sense of danger about a situation or object, which can trigger a physical response in the body known as the stress response that can cause physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, racing pulse, sweaty palms and dry mouth, as well as feeling anxious and panicky. The NCH (National Council for Hypnotherapy) estimate that over 11% of the population have some form of irrational fear, so it’s more common than you may think. Most irrational fears and phobias are a learned response, which is a good thing because it means they can also be unlearned

Hypnotherapy has much success with the treatment of phobias and fears, helping you change the way you think, feel and respond to your old phobia, thereby giving you a greater sense of power in your own life. In our sessions, I will teach you about the body’s stress response so that you understand what’s happening at a physiological level and can start to take control of these automatic responses to the perceived fear. We do this by learning relaxation skills and using a desensitising approach to the phobic response, as well as bringing awareness to your thoughts that accompany the fear, examining these thoughts and replacing them with more helpful ones; this, coupled with visualisation and positive mental imagery will enable you to gradually and gently confront your fear whilst in a state of relaxation and calm.
