Help managing menopause symptoms

Do you suffer from hot flushes, night sweats, low mood or anxiety related to the menopause? If so, then you’re not alone. The menopause (defined as the final period) is a natural part of ageing for women and, for some, can be quite a challenging time. In the UK, according to the NHS, it usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age to reach the menopause being 51 years, although some women may of course experience it earlier, or later than that. Natural menopause occurs when the ovaries begin decreasing their production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which in itself can cause periods to go a bit wonky and change in their frequency. This phase leading up to the final period, known as the perimenopause, can be a time of great transition in terms of what’s happening hormonally and physically and can be unsettling for many women as they experience the effects of these bodily changes.  A number of different symptoms can be experienced, with up to 70% of women experiencing hot flushes and sweats. Other symptoms include mood changes, disturbed sleep, joint aches, anxiety and irritability.

The good news is that hypnotherapy can help to relieve some of these symptoms and has a growing body of evidence to support its effectiveness. Recently, Johnson, Roberts and Elkins (2019) conducted a critical review of the research and literature on complementary and alternative medicine for menopause and concluded that hypnosis and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) have been demonstrated to be safe for treating some of the most common and problematic symptoms of menopause (eg, hot flushes, night sweats and sleep regulation) with hypnosis showing consistent evidence for a clinically significant reduction of hot flushes. As a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist many of the techniques I use are consistent with those mentioned in the CBT research and combined with hypnosis, can help you regain control over your body, reduce the extent of hot flushes, promote relaxation and reduce levels of stress and anxiety.
